Starting January 1st 2027, the sales tax in Spokane County will increase by 0.1%. County commissioners approved the increase in a 3 - 1 vote during the commissioners meeting Tuesday.

Money collected from the sales tax will fund the county's criminal justice system, including law enforcement. It's estimated the tax will raise more than $14 million in the first year.

Spokane County Sheriff John Knowles says the funding will save 40 deputy jobs.

Despite the increase in funding, the county is still facing a larger budget deficit. County commissioners will continue exploring options to reduce that deficit.
