The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) activated a new pedestrian hybrid beacon on State Route 904 in Cheney at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14.
The beacon is installed at the existing crosswalk on the south side of Simpson Parkway to help pedestrians safely cross the road.
Once activated, the beacon will flash yellow to alert drivers to slow down, followed by solid red lights requiring them to stop while pedestrians cross. The beacon will then transition to flashing red, indicating drivers should remain stopped until pedestrians have cleared the crossing.
WSDOT installed the beacon due to a community request, funded through a legislative proviso dedicated to pedestrian and bicycle safety.
